Postnatal Care

After the birth, whether at home, at the Toronto Birth Centre or at St. Michael's hospital, we will monitor the condition of both you and your new baby. If you and the baby are well and your midwife has no concerns, in most circumstances the midwife will leave your residence after 3 – 4 hours, or, if you birthed at the Toronto Birth Centre or the hospital, it is expected you will leave within 3 – 4 hours.

In the days to come, we will usually visit you at home on day 1, day 3, day 5 and day 10 to check on you and the baby. During these home visits we answer your questions, assist with nursing and other aspects of infant care and provide information and guidance for your care during the early days after the birth. We do complete physical assessments on the baby, including the newborn screening test. We are responsible for the care of the healthy client and newborn for the first six weeks postpartum. At 3 – 4 weeks and 6 weeks, you will bring your baby to the clinic to be weighed and examined.
